The Philippines Girls Under-16 National Team return to action compete in the second round of the AFC U16 Women’s Championship 2019 Qualifiers which will be held from 27 February – 3 March 2019 in Mandalay, Myanmar.
The Philippines will face Bangladesh, China PR, and host Myanmar in Group E. The top two teams in each group at the end of the qualifiers will advance to the final round to be held in Thailand on September 2019. The final round also serves as qualifiers for the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup which will be held next year.
The team’s head coach is Gerald Orcullo and will be assisted by coaches Joyce Landagan, Marielle Benitez, and Eleonora Dillera. The team manager is PFF Board of Governors female member Lalaine Sarmiento.
In the qualifiers held last September 2018 in Kathmandu, Nepal, the team defeated Nepal and Malaysia, and lost to Myanmar to advance to the second round as one of the two best second placed teams at the end of the group stage.
“Over the past few years, this team has made major strides in international competitions with two silver medal finishes,” said PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “We hope that this team, led by a formidable coaching staff, make it to the AFC U16 Women’s Championship 2019 final round to be one step closer of reaching the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.”
22 players will represent the team in the second round of qualifiers. The core of players were part of the team that played in the first round of qualifiers.
In preparation for the tournament, the team conducted a training camp at the PFF National Training Center inside the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite and had several tune up matches with several school teams.
The team left for Myanmar last Monday 25 February 2019.
