FIFA addresses mental health conditions with #ReachOut campaign

FIFA, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), launched #ReachOut, a campaign designed to raise awareness on the symptoms of mental health conditions, encourage people to seek help when they need it, and take actions every day for better mental health.

In spearheading the campaign, FIFA president Gianni Infantino stressed the campaign’s importance in raising awareness about mental health conditions and by providing encouraging conversations which could save a life, especially individuals around the world affected by the pandemic.

“Depression and anxiety affect rising numbers of people worldwide, and young people are among the most vulnerable, and having a conversation with family, friends or a healthcare professional can be key.” said Infantino. “FIFA is proud to launch this campaign and we encourage everyone to #ReachOut.”

The campaign features FIFA legends and other football stakeholders, particularly players based in Southeast Asia through FIFA’s partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Philippine Men’s National Team goalkeeper Neil Etheridge is among the ASEAN-based players invited to promote the campaign with the aim of highlighting the importance of reaching out and how to help keep an individual’s mind and bodies healthy.

“There are things we can do to look after our mental health. Talk about your feelings. Keep active. Eat well and drink sensibly. Do something you love doing. Accept and love who you are. Reach out. None of us are superhuman. If things are getting too much, ask for support from your friends, family, and even professional help. #ReachOut,” said Etheridge.
