PFF highlights pro football progress in 2025-26 as Manila Digger ends historic run

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) congratulates Manila Digger FC for their historic its 2025–26 AFC Challenge League, where the Filipino side completed their campaign before a 2,000-strong and appreciative home crowd after a 3-0 second-leg defeat to PKR Svay Rieng at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on April 16, resulting in a 4-1 aggregate score. for the Cambodian champs

PFF President John Anthony Gutierrez lauded the club’s achievement and placed it within the broader progress of Philippine professional football.

“The 2025–26 cycle marks a progressive year for Philippine professional football, highlighted by the deep continental runs of Manila Digger FC and Stallion Laguna Women in their respective AFC competitions,” said Gutierrez.

“For both clubs to reach the latter stages in their debut continental campaigns—Manila Digger in the semifinals and Stallion Laguna in the quarterfinals—demonstrates the growing strength and promise of our domestic game. This is a huge part of the rejuvenated and inspired drive by the entire Philippine football community in elevating the game to greater heights, as shown by the improvement of the game at the national, professional, amateur, and grassroots level.”

Entering the match undefeated in both the Challenge League and the ongoing Philippines Football League (PFL) season, Manila Digger showed early attacking intent. In just the fourth minute, Modou Manneh tested goalkeeper Vireak Dara from distance, while Pa Ousman Gai and Kenji Nishioka were involved in subsequent attacking sequences that kept the Cambodian side under pressure.

However, Svay Rieng capitalized on a set-piece opportunity in the 11th minute, with Saret Krya heading in the opener following a well-delivered cross–his second goal in a Challenge League final.

Manila Digger responded with sustained possession and attempts in the final third, including a blocked effort from Gai and a long-range strike from Nishioka that narrowly missed the target.

The visitors doubled their lead in the 39th minute, as Kwame Peprah finished from close range after an initial save by Omar Njie, placing Manila Digger in a difficult position heading into halftime.

Despite trailing 2-0 at the break, Manila Digger continued to push forward in the second half. Substitute Saikou Ceesay was immediately involved, forcing a save in the 51st minute, while Assan Badjie and Gai came close with aerial efforts. The home side generated multiple chances inside the penalty area, but Svay Rieng’s defensive organization and goalkeeper interventions denied any breakthrough.

The decisive moment came in the 68th minute, when Peprah completed his brace off a 1v2 solo run, extending the lead to 3-0 on the night.

Manila Digger persisted with attacking pressure in the closing stages, earning consecutive corners and creating close-range opportunities, including a blocked attempt from Ceesay in the 87th minute, but were ultimately unable to convert.

Head coach Kim Versales emphasized the performance and lessons drawn from the match and the overall campaign.

“What a way to go out fighting to the last minute trying to find a goal. It’s a 50-50 game, but the difference was efficiency—they (Svay Rieng) converted their chances, and we did not,” he said.

Versales also pointed to the experience as a benchmark for growth. “The level is different, especially in efficiency, physicality, and tactical execution. But this is a big boost for Philippine football—we now understand what is required to compete at this level, and we will continue to improve.”

Despite the semifinal exit, Manila Digger’s campaign represents a significant milestone for Philippine club football. Alongside the quarterfinal run of Stallion Laguna Women in the AFC Women’s Champions League, the performances of Filipino clubs in this cycle underscore a positive trajectory for the professional game in the country.

Domestically, Manila Digger remains in strong contention in the ongoing PFL season, currently sitting in second place with 42 points and four matches remaining in the elimination round.

With Manila Digger and Stallion Laguna Women’s breakthrough AFC performances, PFF calls on Filipino football fans to continue backing local clubs and leagues, like PFL, PFF Futsaliga, and the upcoming PFF U16-19 National Championships in Negros Occidental, as they build on this momentum and contribute to the sustained growth of Philippine football at both domestic and international levels.
