Against elite academies and teams from major cities, an obscure barangay-based club from the far-flung Sierra Madre highlands of Rizal province emerged as the undefeated powerhouse of the PFF Futsaliga U17 Boys’ Division.
For three months, Star FC — representing Barangay Sampaloc, Tanay, Rizal — turned their hours-long commute to the House of Futsal into a weekly spectacle for their community, bringing home futsal victories as pasalubong after every weekend.
And on Sunday, May 18, on the very same World Cup floor of the Philsports Arena and in front of 1,541 screaming fans — a loud portion of whom traversed the winding Marilaque Highway down to the rolling hills of Oranbo, Pasig — Star FC brought home perhaps the biggest sporting prize in Barangay Sampaloc’s history: the gold medals and championship trophy of the inaugural PFF Futsaliga U17 Boys’ Division, presented by the Philippine Sports Commission.
The title was won in trademark Star FC fashion — relentless attacking, impeccable teamwork, and a high-octane pace. Entering the final as the league’s hottest offense with 41 goals in eight games, Star FC erupted for nine goals against the four of EMA Bulacan Highlanders, the tournament’s second-best attacking side with 39 goals entering the championship match.
“Malaking tulong talaga ang grassroots development para sa mga bata. Simula pa lang bata, natututo nang sumipa ng bola, kaya talagang importante yun,” said an ecstatic Star FC manager Marianita Fulgado, the amiable matriarch of 13 boys who simply wanted the chance to play on a World Cup-caliber court.
It did not take long for both squads to ignite the expected goalfest. Bulacan drew first blood in the sixth minute as Jhon Kyle Balcos pounced on a rebound and assisted an onrushing Charlson Vidal, the tournament’s Golden Boot winner.
Star replied almost immediately. Two minutes later, Mark Filnan Samonte slithered past Bulacan’s overloaded left-side defense and buried the equalizer.
The Finals’ surprise standout, Ramil Fraga Jr., and season MVP Franc Obias then began their game-long showtime display. Fraga chipped in a cross from the left flank toward Obias, who headed the ball through the legs of Bulacan goalkeeper Renz Delos Santos for the lead.
Fraga then scored his first goal in the 15th minute after a slick left-sided kick-in combination play with Obias barely crossed the goal line.
Unfazed, Vidal responded with a dazzling solo run from the right flank, weaving past Star goalkeeper Christian Dave Tongohan and two defenders to cut the deficit in the 18th minute.
Bulacan equalized on the very next possession as Balcos unleashed a long-range strike from the midcourt circle off Ashlee Saguimo’s right-sided kick-in, sending the Bulacan supporters into a frenzy.
But Star had the final say before halftime. In the closing minute of the first half, Fraga restored the lead after latching onto a long through ball from Jayden Cruz and finishing from the left side.
The second half, however, belonged entirely to Star FC.
Fraga and company found another gear, with the explosive winger scoring off a second-ball situation in the 27th minute following an assist from team captain Paul Oliran.
Cruz and Vidal then traded goals in the 32nd and 34th minutes, but Star’s momentum proved unstoppable.
Cruz struck again in the 35th minute with a thunderous long-range effort before Roel Opiña put the icing on the cake to seal the emphatic championship victory.
“Sobrang saya, kasi di namin akalaing pwede kaming mag-champion sa league na ganito,” said Fraga, who finished with four goals in the final.
“Dinaan namin sa training. Grabe ang sakripisyo. Kung ano yung ginawa namin sa training, ginawa namin dito at tinapos na namin dito.”
Season MVP Obias also reflected on the magnitude of the triumph for their small community.
“Sobrang halaga sa amin ito kasi galing kami sa maliit na bayan at hindi po talaga namin inexpect na magcha-champion kami dito,” Obias said. “Malaking achievement sa amin iyon na makasali dito sa Futsaliga.”
For Fulgado, the championship represents more than just a trophy.
“Napakarami pang bata sa amin na patuloy na sumisipa ng bola para makatulong din sa pag-aaral nila at magkaroon sila ng magandang kinabukasan,” she underscored, emphasizing futsal’s transformative power for the youth of Tanay.
In the Battle for Bronze, Cavite-based Paul Stiga Academy blanked Nemesis FA, 4-0, with season Best Goalkeeper Charles Marco producing a string of skillful saves to shut down the opposition.
Meanwhile, Golden Boot contender JM Bautista shone one final time as Antipolo City FC captured the Plate title with a 4-2 win against Manila Futsal Team, while Sporting QC secured seventh place after prevailing over PasigLaban in a penalty shootout.
