PFL’s Manila Digger first PH club to win AFC Challenge League QF game

Manila Digger etched its name in Philippine club football history after defeating Indonesia’s Dewa United, 1–0, in the first leg of the 2025–26 AFC Challenge League quarterfinals on Thursday night at Rizal Memorial Stadium in front of 1,400 supporters.

The victory marks the first time a Philippine professional club has won a quarterfinal match in AFC Challenge League history, giving the Philippines Football League (PFL) side a crucial advantage heading into the decisive second leg in Indonesia.

Philippine Football Federation President John Anthony Gutierrez praised the historic achievement of the PFL side.

“Congratulations to Manila Digger for this historic victory that reflects the growing strength of Filipino professional clubs on the continental stage,” Gutierrez said. “Results like this show that our clubs are steadily improving internationally, resulting in greater support from Filipino football fans as seen in the good attendance in RMS.”

Filipino-Japanese forward Kenji Nishioka delivered the match’s lone goal in the 21st minute, finishing a well-crafted move initiated by Gambian midfielder Ousman Gai, who dribbled past defenders before setting up Nishioka in the center of the box. The strike ultimately proved decisive in a tightly contested tactical battle between the two sides.

Manila Digger continued to press for a second goal, with Gai and Modou Manneh testing Dewa United goalkeeper Sonny Stevens in the first half, but the Indonesian side managed to keep the deficit at one.

Dewa United responded with several dangerous chances of their own, including headers by Brazilian striker Alex Martins, but Manila Digger goalkeeper Omar Njie stood firm, producing a series of key saves throughout the match.

Njie’s composure under pressure proved crucial in the closing stages as the Indonesian visitors pushed for an equalizer. The Gambian shot-stopper denied attempts from Ricky Kambuaya and Egy Maulana Vikri, before making a dramatic late stop against Martins strike in front of goal in stoppage time to secure the clean sheet.

Speaking after the match, Nishioka credited the team’s collective effort behind his goal.

“I wasn’t afraid because I always do my best in practice,” Nishioka said in Filipino. “It’s not just me—my teammates are all good. I received a good pass, that’s why I scored. If you don’t have everything working together, you won’t be able to score.”

The two teams will meet again in the second leg of the quarterfinals in Banten, Indonesia, where Dewa United will attempt to overturn the deficit on home soil.

The Philippine Football Federation will broadcast the decisive match live on its official Facebook page at 9:30 PM.
