WAC 2022: Korea Republic 2-0 Philippines

PUNE – The Philippine Women’s National Team finished their memorable AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 campaign yielding to Korea Republic, 2-0, Thursday afternoon at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex.

First half goals from Cho So Hyun and Son Hwayeon denied the Philippines a place in the Women’s Asian Cup final. However with the FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification already secured, the PWNT has already inspired the nation throughout its campaign in the tournament.

“It was really a tough match,” said Philippines head coach Alen Stajcic. “To take this team, so much dedication, so much heart, so much spirit considering how much they have to overcome, and to get to this level and compete until the last kick is truly such a remarkable effort from the team.”

The Philippines had several opportunities to trim the lead with chances from Tahnai Annis, Katrina Guillou, and Sarina Bolden but they could not convert their efforts.

The Koreans pressed on for a third goal in the second half, but the Philippine defense led by Hali Long, Dominique Randle, and Olivia McDaniel on goal held their ground to preserve the scoreline.

The Philippines finished the competition as a first time semifinalist having advanced to the knockout stages for the first time with wins over Thailand and Indonesia. More importantly, the Philippines will see action in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 for the first time in history after defeating Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals
