Philippine Football Federation officials hailed Ceres Negros FC’s win in the AFC Champions League Preliminary Round.
The reigning Philippines Football League champions began their campaign with a 4-3 penalty win (after it ended 1-1 in extra-time) over Myanmar champions Shan United last 16 January 2018 at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar.
Stephan Schröck gave Ceres Negros the lead in the third minute of extra-time, but Shan United drew level several minutes later to set force a penalty shoot-out.
Ceres Negros were perfect in the shootout. Carlie De Murga, Schröck, Mike Ott, and Bienvenido Marañon found the back of the net while Shan United missed two chances in the shootout.
“We congratulate Ceres Negros FC for their win in the first round of the AFC Champions League preliminary round”, said PFF president Mariano Araneta. “Their win shows that clubs in the Philippines have what it takes to face the big clubs in South East Asia.”
The PFL champions will next face Australian side Brisbane Rovers on 23 January 2018 in Brisbane, Australia.
