PFF officials lauded Philippine Men’s National Team goalkeeper Neil Etheridge after his team, Cardiff City FC, earned promotion to the Premier League last Sunday 6 May 2018.
Cardiff City drew Reading, 0-0 in the final day of the English Football Championship. The draw was enough for the Wales-based team to secure promotion to the English Premier League. Etheridge played full 90 minutes in the draw. Cardiff City finished their season at 90 points, with 27 wins, 9 draws, and 10 losses.
It has been a memorable season for the Azkals goalkeeper, who traces his Filipino roots in Tarlac through his mother, Merlina Dula.
Etheridge’s last international appearance was in the 2-1 win over Tajikistan in the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 Qualifiers last 27 March 2018.
“We congratulate Neil Etheridge for a successful season with his club, Cardiff City FC,” said PFF president Mariano Araneta Jr. “He has been a integral part of Cardiff City’s success this season. We anticipate for the day he becomes the very first Filipino player to play in the English Premier League next season.”
