Defending Philippines Football League champions Ceres Negros FC reclaimed the PFL title with three games to spare after a 6-1 win over Global Cebu FC last Wednesday 25 July 2018 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Bienvenido Marañon fired three goals in the 20th, 70th, and 88th minutes to cap off a hat-trick performance.
Mike Ott, Omid Nazari, and Blake Powell contributed to Ceres’ goalscoring run as the City of Smiles becomes the league’s first ever back-to-back champions having won the inaugural season in 2017.
Global gained a consolation goal from Marvin Angeles goal early in the second half.
Ceres wins the PFL title at 54 points, 21 points clear of second placed Kaya FC Iloilo. The title win also allowed a berth to the AFC Champions League Play-off Round next year.
“We congratulate Ceres Negros, its owner Leo Rey Yanson, head coach Risto Vidakovic, team manager Isabella Fernando, and all the club’s players and staff for a remarkable league run which culminated with a second straight PFL title,” said PFF president and Liga Futbol Inc. chairman Mariano V. Araneta Jr. “Ceres are worthy PFL champions, and we wish them the best of luck in the AFC Cup ASEAN Zonal final next week and the upcoming Copa Paulino Alcantara tournament.”
