The Philippines was drawn with Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Tajikistan, and Mongolia in Group A following the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament 2020 Asian Qualifiers First Round draw held last Thursday, 2 August 2018 at the AFC House in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The first round of qualifiers saw 18 teams drawn into 2 groups of 5 teams and 2 groups of 4 teams. The qualifiers will be held from 4-13 November 2018.
The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third placed teams will advance to the second round of the qualifiers which will be held from 1-9 April 2019.
This will be the third tournament for the Women’s National Team this year after playing in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Jordan 2018 last April and the AFF Women’s Championship 2018 last July.
“We like the Philippine Women’s National Team’s chances to advance to the next round of qualifiers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Qualifiers,” said PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “Last April we saw the team go close to qualifying for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup France, now the team will have another crack of qualifying to one of the biggest women football tournaments in the world, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.”
