The Philippine National Team’s AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 run came to an end following a 3-1 loss to Kyrgyz Republic last Wednesday 16 January 2019 at Rashid Stadium in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Stephan Schrock fired a free kick to deliver a historic moment for the Philippines with the first ever goal of the tournament, but it proved to be a consolation as Kyrgyz Republic came away with the full three points.
Vitalij Lux’s three goals in the 30th, 51st, and 78th minutes effectively sealed the Central Asian side’s progress to the knockout stages.
The Azkals, which showed signs of promise in their first match against Korea Republic, finished their maiden Asian Cup campaign at the bottom of Group C, riding their luck against the very best teams in Asia.
Patrick Reichelt almost drew level in the 54th minute when Javier Patiño’s initial effort was parried away, but sent his shot wide of the near post.
A big opportunity came within the final 10 minutes of the Azkals’ campaign. Schrock’s free kick from far out was misjudged by the goalkeeper and found the back of the net.
Patino almost forced a thrilling climax after Schrock’s goal. Substitute Phil Younghusband found the forward with the cross, but Patino was not able to get a touch to the ball as it sailed wide. Another late chance came for Reichelt minutes later to make it 3-2, but his shot was wide.
