The Philippines Under-22 Team almost claimed an upset win, but were inflicted with a 2-1 loss at the hands of Vietnam in the opening match of the AFF U22 Championship 2019 last Sunday 17 February 2019 at the National Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
After goalkeeper Michael Asong kept Vietnam at bay with several stops on defence, the Philippines took the lead in the 51st minute. Midfielder Jeremiah Borlongan fired a free kick past the Vietnam defense.
The Philippines held on for most of the second half until Vietnam found their resolve by scoring in the 74th and 78th minutes to turn the match around.
Assistant coach Andres Gonzales hailed the resilience of the players despite the loss.
“The boys fought hard, but we collapsed towards the end,” explained Gonzales. “The players did well under the circumstances.”
The Philippines U22 next face Thailand U22 on Tuesday 19 February 2019.
