The Philippine Men’s National Team suffered a heartbreaking 0-1 loss to Vietnam last Wednesday 14 December 2022 at the Hang Day Stadium in Hanoi, Vietnam.
A looping ball from Vietnamese midfielder Nguyen Van Quyet found its way to the top corner and allowed Vietnam to come away with a win against the Philippines, which had defended well throughout the 90 minutes with Audie Menzi, Amani Aguinaldo, and Kevin Hansen at the back.
The Philippines had showed signs of promise in the first half. Yrick Gallantes sent in a cross to Jesus Melliza in the 35th minute, but was unable to control the ball allowing the hosts to clear their lines.
“To play against a team like Vietnam, I had to defend deep in the first half. In the second half I threw a lot of young players in and they had some efforts,” said Philippines head coach Josep Ferre.
The Azkals now head to Cambodia for their final preparations for the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 group stage.
