Dov Cariño’s 93rd minute header gave the Philippine Under-22 Men’s National Team its first point in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games after a thrilling 1-1 draw against hosts Cambodia, Tuesday night at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The draw puts the Philippines on the board with one point, and remained in contention in Group A with two matches remaining.
Reeling from a 0-3 loss to Indonesia in their opening match last Saturday, the Rob Gier’s side were determined to get a vital result against the host nation.
Andres Aldeguer, Dennis Chung, and Pocholo Bugas had their chances early on but were unable to create trouble in the Cambodian defense.
Cambodia would then take the lead in the 26th minute. The Philippine defense was able to close down the counter, but the fall went to Ky Rina who fired a low shot from outside the box which was touched by Quincy Kammeraad, but found its way to the back of the net.
Despite the disadvantage, the team never gave up and found the back of the net in the third minute of added time. Harry Nuñez played a well placed cross for Cariño, to head it in to force the draw.
The Under-22 side return on Thursday, 04 May 2023 with a match against Timor-Leste.
