Global Cebu FC reignited their AFC Cup campaign with a late 2-1 win over Yangon United last Tuesday 13 March 2018 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Rufo Sanchez was the hero of the match after netting a penalty kick in the dying seconds of the match.
Darryl Roberts met Dominic Del Rosario’s free kick with a header in the 80th minute to put Global 1-0 up.
As the match headed into stoppage time, Yangon United made it 1-1. Maung Lwin scored a diving header past Patrick Deyto to draw level.
Conceding the late equalizer did not dampen Global’s spirits and were rewarded when Sanchez was fouled inside the box in the 94th minute. The Spanish forward duly converted from the spot to give Global their first win in the AFC Cup.
Global head coach Marjo Allado was delighted with how his players found the resolve to win the match after conceding a late equalizer.
“What’s important for us at the moment is that we won and we got the three points to bring back the confidence of the players,” said Allado.
Goalscorer and Man of the Match Roberts stressed that the win was important in their bid to qualify for the next round.
“The three points were necessary and was important for us to progress onto the next game in the AFC Cup,” said Roberts. “Hopefully we can take this step forward and continue on a victorious run.”
