Defending two-time champions De La Salle University and last year’s runners up University of Santo Tomas opened the new season of the PFF Women’s League 2019 with wins last Saturday at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.
La Salle began their campaign with a 7-2 win over Maroons FC. The Lady Archers had six different goalscorers in the first match of 2019. Philippine Women’s National Team forward Alisha Del Campo bagged a second-half brace for La Salle in the 75th and 87th minutes.
Rookie Angelica Teves scored the match’s opening goal in the 18th minute, with the returning Anicka Castaneda (30′) and Bea Delos Reyes (31′) added two more in a thirteen minute stretch for a 3-0 lead.
Marian Ruiz pulled a goal back in the 37th minute, but veteran Christine Duran restored their three-goal edge two minutes later for a 4-1 half-time lead. Sara Castaneda added their sixth six minutes later, with Del Campo completing her brace in the 87th minute to get all three points.
Catriona Yeneza scored from the outside in added time for Maroons’ second goal
UST also claimed their first win in the PFF Women’s League over Tigers FC, 3-2.
Natalie Absalon’s two goals paved the way for last season’s runners-up to their first win despite nearly blowing a 3-0 lead down the stretch.
Absalon scored the match’s first in the 26th minute, with Kristine Aboabo making it 2-0 in the 40th minute. Absalon added a third six minutes into the second half, but Tigers struck back to trim the lead by one goal thanks to Lovely Fernandez’s brace in the final 20 minutes.
