Lovely Fernandez’s eight minute winner was enough for University of Santo Tomas to upset leaders Far Eastern University to remain in contention for a spot in the knockout stage of the PFF Women’s Cup last night 30 November 2022 at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.
A UST long ball near the center line found Fernandez sprinting free towards the box and latched a chip over Liliana Portillo for the only goal of the match.
With a goal down early in the match, FEU launched a tirade of chances on the UST goal, but goalkeeper Regine Rasonable put on a valiant stand on goal, earning player of the match plaudits in preserving the clean sheet.
“We thoroughly prepared for the match against FEU,” said Rasonable after the match. “We put our hearts together to get this win.”
The result puts UST in fifth place with seven points, three points behind fourth placed University of the Philippines, which has 10 points heading to the final weekend of the group stage.
In the other match, Joyce Semacio and Maria Dungo combined for Ateneo de Manila University as they edged Azzurri SC, 2-1.
Semacio broke the deadlock in the 24th minute, but Azzurri equalized on the stroke of half-time with Hannah Muros scoring.
Dungo sealed the win in the 69th minute after a pass in the box allowed the substitute to break free and slot home from the near post.
