Bucked under pressure in a must-win tie against Malaysia, the Philippine Women’s National Team leaned on a late, late Sarina Bolden header to claim the three points and remain in contention of a knockout spot in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games last night at the Army Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Bolden found Sara Eggesvik’s free kick from a tight angle in the final minute of additional time to secure the win for the Filipinas.
The Filipinas, however, had to dug deep throughout the match as Malaysia frustrated them throughout the match with a defensive performance.
“Sarina is classic example of someone who just dug really deep to find the winner and inspire the team and kept us alive by the skin of our teeth,” said Filipinas head coach Alen Stajcic. ““We have to win now to stay alive in the tournament. It’s a must-win game for us. Vietnam, we’ve beaten them once in our history. That was last year at the AFF at home in the Philippines.”
The Philippines look to clinch a place to the knockout place against defending gold medalists Vietnam on Tuesday, 09 May 2023 at the same venue.
