The Under-17 Filipinas Philippines Women’s National Football Team has finished their 2024 AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup campaign, but they made a gallant stand, as former U17 World Cup champion Korea Republic forced a 1-1 draw to end the Group A competition on Sunday in Bali, Indonesia.
Filipina co-captain Ariana Markey sank a rare Olympic goal from the right corner kick in the 38th minute to lift the Philippines ahead.
Unfortunately, a tackle by South Korean World Cup veteran Casey Phair on defender Aiselyn Sia near the goal cleared the path of an unmarked Beom Ye-Joo, who scored off the loose ball in the 74th minute.
The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) applauded the U17 Philippine Women’s National Team for an impressive and promising campaign in the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup 2024 as they defeated host country Indonesia and drew South Korea.
“Their final game in the group stage versus South Korea showed that the team is an emerging contender in women’s Asian football. It was unfortunate that a no call on the 74th minute prevented the team from advancing but the Filipinas held their ground and fought hard. Moreover, the draw vs South Korea showed that the Filipina footballer can be at par with the best in the world. We hope that this will encourage many more young girls to work hard as they aspire to represent the country someday. I thank and congratulate the players, Coach Siniza and his staff and the management team led by Mr. Jeff Cheng for their perseverance and dedication.” Said PFF President John Gutierrez.
With the draw, Korea Republic has advanced to the semifinals with a superior +6 goal difference over the Filipinas.
“We narrowly won against ASEAN powerhouse Vietnam to qualify to the U17 Asian Cup for the first time. Today, a former world champion has forced a draw on us. We may have exited the Asian Cup, but we did not lose against a world powerhouse,” said Philippine Football Federation (PFF) President John Gutierrez on the result.
The U17 Filipinas have finished their Asian Cup debut with four points off a 6-1 win against Indonesia last Monday and a 0-6 loss against Korea DPR last Thursday.
